Teaching aims and demands:
1、To learn some details about Halloween.
2、To improve different reading strategies.
3、To be familiar with some useful expressions about Halloween and people’s activities.
 
Teaching steps
Step1. Lead-in
Ss recall the festivals learned last period.
T: we can do different activities to celebrate different festivals, and we know that Hobo is going to dress up as Monkey King for Halloween. What about you? What are you going to dress up as for the coming Halloween?
Ss’ SHOW TIME: Ss act out similar dialogues like Comic strip.
Three pairs to the Bb.
 
Step2. Fast Reading
T: So people always dress up at Halloween. Do you know some other information about Halloween? Today we will read a letter from Wendy to Millie about Halloween.
Ss go through the letter quickly and answer the following Qs:
1、When is Halloween?
2、What game do children play at Halloween?
3、What do they often make for Halloween?
 
Step3. Detailed Reading
1、Ss read the whole letter by themselves and match the two parts below:
     Paragraph                                      Headings
   Para.1                                   A. pumpkin lanterns
   Para.2                                   B. Halloween parties
   Para 3                                   C. When is Halloween?
   Para 4                                   D. trick or treat
   Para 5                                   E. dressing up
After matching work, Ss learn the letter paragraph by paragraph.
2、Read the first paragraph together and finish the sentences:
Wendy thanks Millie for _______________ about ____________________.
People celebrate _____________ in the USA.
Halloween is Wendy’s ____________________________.
People have ____________________________ at Halloween.
Ss read the finished sentences together, paying attention to some important phrases.
3、(1) Ss read the second paragraph after the tape and find out some verb phrases to tell how to play the game ‘trick or treat’.
(2) Ss read the phrases together:
(play a game called ‘trick or treat’, knock on people’s doors, shout ‘trick or treat’, give them some candy as a treat, play a trick on sb.)
(3) Ss try to retell how to play the game ‘trick or treat’ with the help of the verb phrases.
4. (1) One student reads the third paragraph, and the others listen and find out how people dress up themselves at Halloween:
wear special costumes with masks, paint their faces
(2) Finish the two multiple choices below:
Why do they wear masks or paint their faces?
A.    People can know who they are.
B.    It is wonderful.
C.    People do not know who are they.
What will Wendy dress up as this year?
A.    She will dress up as a pumpkin.
B.    She will dress up as a ghost.
C.    She will dress up as a tiger.
5、Boys read the fourth paragraph and girls find out:
How do people make pumpkin lanterns?
They cut out the eyes, the nose and the sharp teeth.
6、Ss listen to the tape of the fifth paragraph and tell if the sentence below are true or false:
 (1) Millie’s family always have a party on the morning of October 31st.
 (2) People like to eat special Halloween chocolates and candies at the party.
 (3) They have hot drinks and lots of mooncakes.
 
Step4. Post Reading
1. Ss recall the letter again and find out:
How do people celebrate Halloween?
(What activities do people do to celebrate Halloween?)
(have a party, play a game called ‘trick or treat’, dress up, paint their faces, make pumpkin lanterns, eat Halloween chocolates and candies, have hot drinks and food)
2. Complete an unfinished note to examine Ss’ understanding.
     Read the finished note together.
 
Step5. Homework
Read the letter again carefully;
